Our team of professional and experienced Hygienists consisting of Jo-Anne Boulby,
Julie Melville and Sue Walklett are a key part of the dental team and play an important
role in maintaining the health of your mouth, teeth and gums.
There are three key areas in which our Hygienists care for you:
- Treating gum disease (also known as ‘gingivitis’ or periodontal disease) - this is
caused by plaque which is a sticky film of bacteria. If left untreated your gums
will start to swell and bleed, ultimately resulting in loss of teeth. Tooth loss
does not come through growing older but through gum disease.
- Removing tartar (also known as calculus) from teeth - this is done using a technique
known as ‘scaling and polishing’.
- Teaching patients good oral hygiene techniques which are individually tailored to
your individual needs and oral health.
Gum disease is preventable - some tips for a healthy mouth, teeth and gums are:
- Use a toothbrush with a small head
- Use a toothbrush with medium textured, nylon bristles
- Use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste
- Brush thoroughly for 3 minutes at least twice a day
- Remember to concentrate on the area where teeth meet gums
- Use dental tape, floss or interdental brushes to clean between your teeth
- If necessary, use disclosing tablets to help identify areas of the mouth which need
more attention
- Watch the number of sugary snacks and drinks you have between meals
- REMEMBER TO VISIT YOUR DENTIST AND HYGIENIST REGULARLY!
